Rocks Rock! Hands-on Earth Science

March 29, 2008; 9AM-3PM (Continental Breakfast at 8:30)

Earth Science becomes “Fun Science” when you play Rockity-Rock-Rock-Rocks (three types of rock), read stories of Mr. Sandy Stone (rock cycle) and play with Plate Puzzles (plate tectonics).  This one-day workshop will utilize hands-on approaches to the address Earth Science Content Standards and more.  Topics will also include geologic time; Alabama rocks, fossils and prehistoric life; human uses of natural resources; and, the Earth and Moon in space.  Teachers will also preview literature that can be incorporated into to earth science studies and receive a cd with lesson plans, activity ideas, and graphics depicting amazing Alabama’s geology. 

A $25 registration deposit is required but will be refunded when you turn in your evaluation materials.

Reading, Writing and the Environment    

April 23, 2008        9AM-3PM (Continental Breakfast at 8:30)

Hands-on activities that incorporate literacy into your science curriculum!  Nature journaling, word sorts, seed stories, read-alouds, fold-a-poems, word trees, steal-the bacon vocabulary game, … You will practice strategies that improve your students reading and writing skills while challenging their scientific thinking.  Learn how to use NSTA recommended picture books to launch exciting inquiry-based science activities.  You will receive a recommended reading list plus a cd full of great ideas! 

A $25 registration deposit is required but will be refunded when you turn in your evaluation materials.

Plants Plus – Project Learning Tree and more

Want to learn to identify native trees and plants?  Want fun ways to teach your students botany?  Looking for ways to enliven your lessons?  This workshop is for you.  We’ll spend Friday afternoon using kid-friendly dichotomous keys to name, name, name, plus learn some fun folklore and creative crafts.  That evening, we’ll go for a stroll under the stars and get a different view of the forest.  We’ll sleep in Reimel Hall, overlooking the falls.  Saturday we’ll take in the Project Learning Tree training, a nationally recognized program which provides interdisciplinary approaches to teaching about trees.  You will receive the PLT Activity Guide book.

About the Instructor

Heather Montgomery

Ms. Montgomery holds a B.S. in Biology and an M.S. in Environmental Education.  She has taught both in the classroom and out-of-doors.  Heather is passionate about teaching children about the natural world.  She has directed an environmental center for 6 years and trained hundreds of teachers in the art of introducing children to nature.  She is also the author of science articles for children.
